The Philippines agreed to host this event which was a part of their efforts to attract tourism & investors. Beauty Pageants are quite popular there, especially among tens of millions of poor ones who watch the contests as the chance for their beautiful compatriots to live a life full of fame & luxury.
Allowing the Philippines as host was controversial with critics claiming that it would whitewash the drug war of Duterte which left around 6,000 people dead. Environmentalists hit on the organizers for letting the contestants swim in bikini with endangered sharks& whales.
Excited fans from across the world, despite of these controversies lined up to watch the pageant before dawn. Fans were dressed in gowns taking selfies out in the seaside arena where the competition was going to be held.
