On Monday, 30th January, Miss France Iris Mittenaere was crowned as Miss Universe in a made-for-television pageant. It was unlike last year’s dramatic mix-up but with a hint of political controversy as the finalists spoke on the hot global issues & refugee crisis.

In the final round of questioning, when asked about the global refugee crisis, she highlighted the advantages of open borders. She said that in France, people want to have most globalization; they want to have the biggest exchange of people they can. Someday might that will change but currently they have open borders. Having this allows them to travel more through the world & find out more about what all is out there.

The event was headlined with performers of US including Grammy award winning rhythm and blues group, Grammy award nominee Flo Rida, Boys II men & rapper.

Last year Pia Wurtzbach of Philippines won followed by a blunder made by the Emmy award winner Steve Harvey which was the host who awarded Miss Columbia, the title. Later on he corrected his mistake by apologizing to her and to Miss Columbia. The mistake was featured on the show with candidates & most of the audience ribbing about it.

Wurtzbach thanked Steve at the opening of the show saying that she never got to thank him for making her the most popular Miss Universe. Harvey this year got through the ceremony smoothly of the closing moments.

The Philippines agreed to host this event which was a part of their efforts to attract tourism & investors. Beauty Pageants are quite popular there, especially among tens of millions of poor ones who watch the contests as the chance for their beautiful compatriots to live a life full of fame & luxury.

Allowing the Philippines as host was controversial with critics claiming that it would whitewash the drug war of Duterte which left around 6,000 people dead. Environmentalists hit on the organizers for letting the contestants swim in bikini with endangered sharks& whales.

Excited fans from across the world, despite of these controversies lined up to watch the pageant before dawn. Fans were dressed in gowns taking selfies out in the seaside arena where the competition was going to be held.
