Roger Federer won his 5th Australian Open and clinched his 18th Grand Slam Title and 1st in four and half years after a rollercoaster ride of a 35th chapter of his rivalry with Rafael Nadal by exciting 5 set of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

The 35-year-old champion outshined his victorious return from a knee surgery with a record-extending 18th major title after a classic battle with his rival, Nadal, who won all three of their previous matches at Melbourne Park.

Nadal is a lefthander, he also returning from injury this year, exhibited sustained periods of his best performance from the baseline but was unable to stay with his rival in the gut-wrenching display of the final set. Federer was compelled to endure a nervous wait for his win after his opponent Nadal unsuccessfully challenged the line call on the second championship point.
But he finally managed to celebrate his victory with tears in his eyes after coming out on top after the 3 hour and 38 minutes of thrilling tennis match thus becoming the first man to win more than five titles at three different grand slams. He said that tennis does not have draws but he would have been happy to share one with Rafael.

Nadal said that he wasn’t sure that he was going to make it. Nadal being the 2009 champion also hopes to see him next year and if not, it’s been a wonderful run here, he said. It was gracious after losing 3rd final of Melbourne coming short for 15th grand slam title. He congratulated Federer on how amazing he played.
Federer made a slow start to the match with Nadal drawing him in lengthy rallies and aiming for his backhand. Federer made the first breakthrough, converting the initial break point of the match with a forehand winner to go 5-4 up. He had two break points in the next game but Nadal fought them and broke as he struggled for accuracy.

Momentum swung when Federer showed some brilliant shots rattling the next two games, leaving the opponent scrambling to fend off a second break in marathon fourth game. Nadal broke for 3-1 in the fourth set, when Federer netted a backhand volley under pressure in the next set with brilliant crosscourt at full stretch.
Federer was not prepared to give up so easily on his first grand slam after 2012 Wimbledon. Nadal was still battling away when Federer finally bagged the game.
