Boys! This Is For You And It’s About Watches

Naturally, this is not the principles one would normally like to judge a complex mechanical wristwatch by. Nonetheless, it is still exciting to take stock of the year, looking back to see what the most expensive timepieces were. Isn’t it? boys!!

The top spot belongs to Vacheron Constantin with its breathtaking Reference 57260. Though the original sale price of this watch was never revealed as it was a custom commission by a private collector, its asking price is expected by industry insiders as coming in anywhere between 5 and 10 million dollars. I like to think that it fell in the upper end of that range.

Holding 57 complications, it holds almost twice as many as Patek Philippe’s famed Supercomplication, which beat for a record 24 million dollars at a Sotheby’s auction in November 2014. So even if this were not the most precious watch to sell this year, chances are very good that it might become the most precious watch ever to sell sometime in the near or far future.

In Geneva, at the biannual Only Watch auction, which was held in November 2015, a brand-new, unique-piece Patek Philippe Reference 5016A-010 hit for 7.3 million Swiss francs. You can read a first-hand account of this, and see original photography,

This was the 6th edition of the charity auction that promotes the Monegasque Association against Muscular Dystrophy, which fights the rare Duchenne strain of the illness. Organizer Luc Pettavino’s son was the motivation: he is one of the afflicted. All incomes from the auction help finance analysis for this neuromuscular disease that strikes one in 3,500 boys worldwide.

Only Watch has become a genuine marketplace for show-stopping, one-of-a-kind timepieces; the collector finds gems here that can be had nowhere else, and the good news is that all profits go to a good cause. For brands big and small the advertising that comes along with the world tour that leads the main event in addition to the auction is worth every penny of donating a specifically made watch with an element that makes it one-of-a-kind.

The third most costly watch of 2015 also hit at auction, the Phillips the Geneva Watch Auction. This stainless steel Patek Philippe chronograph from 1927 established a new world record for stainless steel watches when it was sold on May 10, 2015, by Phillips. It was here that a 1927 Patek Philippe monopusher ‘doctor’s’ chronograph in stainless steel wearing an off-white silvered dial with elegant patina hammered for the sum of 4,987,383 dollars or 4,645,000 Swiss francs, after just 21 minutes on the block. It auctioned to an anonymous bidder on the telephone for a cost that was more than double its low rating and setting a new record for any stainless steel wristwatch ever traded at auction.

This is one of only 2 examples of this model, both of which were made for a retailer in South America; the other is placed in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.

All in all, in three auctions held in 2015, Phillips traded 10 watches priced at more than 1 million dollars.
