NASA has plans to start a new robotic science rover in 2020. The aimed mission is part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, a long-term trial of robotic exploration of the red planet. This highly proficient rover would be based on NASA’s encouraging Mars Science Laboratory mission architecture, covering its Curiosity rover and proven landing operation.

The budget for this mission is unpredictable on future appropriations. The project will assess alternatives for infusing new skills through investments by NASA programs and also including the Astrobiology Program, and contributions from international associates.

How it’s Relevant to Astrobiology? The Mars 2020 mission will address key issues about the potential for life on Mars. The mission will examine aspects of the geologic and climatic history of Mars that are related to query surrounding habitability in the planet’s past and present.

Many of the potential aims for the Mars 2020 mission that are currently being formed are directly relevant to Astrobiology. It includes some certain points. These are:
  •     Characterize the climate of Mars
  •     Seeking signs of past life (biosignatures) in the geological record
  •     Characterize the geology of Mars
  •     Determine whether life ever arose on Mars

Mars 2020 is the next step in NASA’s robotic research of Mars, a primary objective of astrobiology research in the Solar System, and will form on the accomplishments of Mars Science Laboratory. Many researchers supported by elements of the Astrobiology Program are linked in the design and improvement of the Mars 2020 mission and its scientific aims.

The Astrobiology Program also funds the expansion of instruments that could be carried on the Mars 2020 mission.

David Des Marais’ work in associating mineralogy to habitability directly informs the procedures that could be employed on Mars 2020, and he worked as part of the 2020 science definition team.
