Best Ways You’re Ruining Your Workout Wear Without Realizing It

It feels so better when you finishing up a good old fashioned sweat session.

But on the other side, the not-so-fun part is when you have to do laundry. Can you re-wear soiled gym clothes? How correctly should you be cleaning them to keep them looking brand new and pill-free? If you exercise on the regular, these are some few questions you have. After all, you spent good money for your athleisure looks, so it makes sense that you’d want to store them in pristine condition.

For the dos and don’ts, here are some tips by Yoon Chung, chief merchant at Carbon38.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT WASHING

You wear your jeans many times before you wash them, but for leggings you so shouldn’t the same go for your leggings? Chung said that’s not the case. ‘I suggest washing after each exercise as the odor-causing bacteria can close pores, cause skin breakouts and yeast infections,’ described the pro. Same laundry rules apply for your undies!

THE UNDERWEAR TOPIC

So should you or shouldn’t you? Some people favor to go commando because panties bunch and chaffing is a real thing, but others favor to keep all their bases covered. So what’s right? It’s up to each person, more of a personal preference.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS

Each item is made separately with different stuff so, first to be sure that read the wash instructions on the clothes themselves. Some need a hand wash and some can be washed in the washer. You’re just going to need to keep the water cold because hot water can break down clothes fiber and can begin to shrinkage, same goes for dryer heat, so be certain to hang dry.

SOFTENERS, DETERGENTS, AND MORE

Applying fabric softeners, optical brighteners or fragrances are definitely not advised, if you ever think why your leggings come out of the washer with white spots and patches. Probably it’s because you’re using one of the brightener or clothes softeners. Those can get in between and clog the stuff of the fabrics, which can restrain their ability to wick sweat and fight smells. As for normal laundry detergent? That’s an ideal; it reduces sweat smell and bacteria development.

PART BY COLOUR

Feel free to separately wash your bras, legging, and tops, but divide them by colour. Whites and bright shades can be washed together, but separately from the dark shades. Additionally, if you have fancier active wear like anything with zipper detail, toss those items in a lingerie bag. Zippers can rub on performance fabrics during the wash and cause fraying and pilling.

IF YOUR CLOTHES STILL HAVE A SMELL

Sometimes, for whatever cause, no matter how many times you toss them in the wash, your clothes still hold tight to a strange odor. If that’s the case, there is a trick: you need to soak your workout clothes in a mix of cold water and half a cup of white vinegar for 15 to 30 minutes.

That’s all you need for your workout clothes.
