The London Eye is the very famous symbols of the Britain’s capital, and if you are for vacation or staying here it is a must place to visit.  It can be admired on the south side of the Thames River, and also close to the famous Big Ben. Also known as the Millennium Wheel. The London eye is 135 mtr tall, 120 meters diameter. It was built in 1999, that time it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world. It gives great views over London, and it is a must for every tourist. Here are some facts.

The London Eye gives the best views over the city. As mentioned it before, it is 135 meters tall, which allows its passengers to cherish the view of the city about 25 miles away. On a sunny day, when there are no clouds, you will be able to see the Windsor Castle. This makes the London Eye one of the special platforms in London, and also the highest building in the city.

Every year, around three and a half million people visited here every year, including tourists and London residents. The London Eye entertains more visitors than the Great Pyramids of Giza or the Taj Mahal in India. The large wheel can carry 800 passengers on every turn.

The London Eye has 32 capsules around its wheel, one for each area of London. A capsule weighs 10 tones, and the entire wheel weights 320 tones. Each capsule can take 25 passengers, and you can actually walk around in the capsule; they are that big. Also, the capsules have air-condition, and comfortable sits.

The 32 capsules of the London Eye are actually counted from 1 to 33, because the number 13 is skipped, for the good luck of the observation wheel.

A complete circle of the London Eye takes 30 min; the capsules travel with a chill pace of 26 centimetres per second, and the wheel doesn’t stop for the riders to step in and out.

It is not a Ferris wheel, but the world’s highest cantilevered observation wheel, and that its forerunner was The Great Wheel, which was in use between 1895 and 1906. After being used by more than 2 million people, the Great Wheel was destroyed in 1907.

The London Eye is the main spot of the famous London’s New Year’s Eve firework presentation. It was light up in the colours of the British flag, in order to rejoice the wedding of Prince William with Kate Middleton.  The London Eye is light up in blue, but in 2005, it was lit pink, to praise the 1st Civil Partnership performed on it.

It took 7 years to be constructed, and some of the most famous architects in the world planned it, including David Marks, Mark Sparrowhawk, and Julia Barfield.

Kate Moss, one of the most iconic VIPs of London, has been on the London Eye 25 times; and it’s a record for a celebrity from the United Kingdom.

The London Eye won more than 30 awards from 2000 to 2012, for the best ride, experience, best attraction, design, and much more.
