Electric Car by IIT-Bombay Is Possibly the Fastest Electric Sports Car Ever

IIT Bombay racing team has developed what they claim to be the fastest Indian Electric Racing Car named ‘OCRA,’ which we can see racing in July in the Formula Student (UK), which is the international counterpart of Formula One at the engineering college level. OCRA can reach at the maximum speed of 145 kmph and has an acceleration of 0-100 kmph in just 3.47 seconds. The car is completely designed by the students of IIT Bombay’s racing team has been inaugurated at the PC Saxena Auditorium inside of college. Shardul Jade, who is a final year ‘EE’ student who is participant of the project, said this project was not a part of their curriculum and was completed by the racing team after several brainstorming experiments in the laboratory, where students usually spends most of their time.

It took around 9 months to build the electric car for the team of more than 70 IIT-B students. OCRA acceleration is a record as it beats famous car manufacturers like Audi, Porsche and Tesla. This is the first time the team has made a special steel-frame chassis along-with carbon-fiber manufactured body, which reduces the weight also stabilizes the car at high speed,” as per team leader of team ORCA Rishabh Kappasia, who is a 4th year student of Engineering.

The team has successful reduced the chassis weight with more than 20,000 components to only 29 kg. A low-voltage safety system has been developed ensure driver’s safety. The low voltage safety system continuously monitors the cell temperature and keeps the low and high voltage systems separate. With the help of new developed chassis for the first time the electric car can accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 1.86 seconds. Professor and Mentor of IIT-B are amazed by the idea and students developed this entire project on their own.

OCRA is the fifth version of electric car which is manufactured by IIT Bombay’s racing team which uses a 95 cells battery pack, which will deliver a constant 80 kilowatt power to the motor. Nilesh Bansode, is the chief mechanical officer and driver of this amazing machine, is a part of team for last three years. Team has used energy density to manufacture packing friction technique which can be compared to TESLA’s achievement.
